Emotional Intelligence in Hong Kong

OI Partners is delighted to bring to Hong Kong the Bar On EQi measure of Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) - what is it?
Using the BarOn Model of EI, it is defined as:
"A range of emotional and social competencies that affect how we understand ourselves, understand and interact with others, and how we manage daily demands and pressures"

EI - how can we measure it?
By using the BarOn EQ-i (Emotional Quotient Inventory).

This instrument is the result of 20 years of research by its creator, Dr. Reuven BarOn, who created the term 'EQ' (Emotional Quotient). It measures emotional intelligence across the following competencies:
Intrapersonal                        Adaptability
Self-regard                         Reality Testing
Emotional Self-Awareness      Flexibility
Assertiveness                      Problem Solving
Independence
Self-actualisation                 Stress Management
                                        Stess Tolerance
Interpersonal                    Impulse Control
Empathy
Social Responsibility              General Mood
Interpersonal Relationship       Optimism
                                         Happiness

Important key facts about the EQ-i:

  • Its research has used extensive age and gender norms for creating accurate scores
  • It has been cross-culturally normed and validated in more than a dozen countries
  • It has excellent validity and reliability

EI/EQ - why is it important?
Research shows that the Emotional Quotient (EQ) is a significant factor in total performance:

         EQ = 27%

         IQ = 6%

         Training and experience = 67%

EQ - how can it be used to enhance performance?
By understanding our level of EQ we can become more effective in all aspects of our lives.

Self
We are able to understand how and why we react to situations in a particular way, and how effective our response is likely to be.

Others
We can improve the effect of our interactions with others. Inside the organisation as a leader or team member. Outside the organisation in all interfaces with external parties. In our personal world, in how we interact with our family and friends.

Teams
We can improve the effectiveness of a team by having a better understanding of individual EQ strengths and weaknesses, and using this to develop a more open and supportive environment.

EQ - how can it be developed?

  • Measure the Emotional Quotient (EQ) of individuals using the BarOn EQ-i
  • Improve EQ either through personal coaching or group programmes, or a combination of both.
